Families with Delta Dental Insurance

As of March 1st, 2023, our office has made the transition from being an “in-network” to an “out-of network” provider with Delta Dental Insurance.

Families with Delta Dental Insurance are still able to utilize Delta Dental Insurance benefits and have Dr. Lau see your family for their dental needs.  We work regularly with patients who have Delta Dental as an “out of network” provider.  We will gladly file insurance claims on your behalf and work to maximize your existing benefits.

What will this mean for those who have
Delta Dental Insurance?

  • Per Delta Dental’s Out-of-Network Policy, Delta Dental Insurance will not allow assignment of benefits to Out-of-Network providers. This means that Delta Dental will not send reimbursement for dental services to the office of Dr. Terrence Lau. This is Delta Dental’s rule.
You will be responsible to pay for services at the time of treatment.

  • Payment can be made by cash, check, credit card, or via your FSA or HSA.

  • Our office will gladly take care of the necessary paperwork and process your insurance claim on your behalf for Delta Dental.

  • Delta Dental will issue payment directly to you at the Out-of-Network reimbursement rate.

  • Your out-of-pocket expense depends on the Delta Dental insurance plan for which you are subscribed. Please review your current policy to ensure you are on the plan you intended to subscribe to.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, and yes! We will just be considered an “Non-Contracted Provider” as we have been for many of our non-Delta Dental insured patients for years. Rest assured there will still be coverage.

  • Yes! We will submit all claims and do the paperwork for you. In some cases, we will even issue special letters explaining your dental treatment when Delta Dental requires this. Insurance claims are typically submitted electronically within a day after treatment. (Please note: You may receive a letter from Delta saying that you will have to do all your paperwork. This is simply untrue! We are still able to submit all claims for you.)

  • Delta Dental requires that they send the benefit payment check to you directly. This means we will require payment in full at the time of service and Delta Dental will then reimburse you within a few weeks.

As a non-contracted provider, they will change some of the reimbursement rates. For some, the changes will be negligible. Delta Dental has a policy of not providing offices reimbursement information to a non-contracted dentist. They will speak and give information to YOU, as the insured party, only. Their number is 1-888-335-8227.

  • Not necessarily. Although it is true that employers are shifting more dental costs to their employees, it does depend on the type of Delta Dental Insurance plan your employer chose for you. We are conservative dentists and many of you have referred family and friends for second opinions due to our reputation of treating conservatively and appropriately.

  • We answer this with some hesitation as the dental insurance industry changes rapidly. If you have a human resource (HR) department, we encourage you to contact them to discuss your options for the most effective benefit plans for your family. However, we will always be considered a “non-contracted provider” to all dental insurance companies. As long as you have a PPO plan, you will be able to use your benefits at our office.

  • Delta Dental is the largest dental insurance provider. They have used that leverage to make significant policy changes to the types and amounts of procedures that they will cover. This is both limiting and frustrating as a clinician looking to provide comprehensive, conservative, individualized care. Instead of compromising our patient care and limiting treatment choices, we decided to focus on our commitment to take care of your child by providing the best individualized and preventive care possible. In the long run, this will promote positive lifelong oral health with your child.

We understand this may create some confusion and uncertainty for some families and we are here to answer your questions. Please contact the office if you have questions or concerns.
